Citizenship Program Assistant

** This is a temporary grant-funded position through 6/30/18. **


The Citizenship Program Assistant will connect customers to citizenship programming, such as NYCitizenship, Immigrant Justice Corps and other immigration-related services, within the Queens Library system. The Citizenship Program Assistant will work with Queens Library staff, Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs, Immigrant Justice Corps and other community partners to implement NYCitizenship, citizenship preparation and other immigration and naturalization services. The Citizenship Program Assistant will conduct outreach, recruit customers, schedule appointments, provide referrals and facilitate information sessions. The Citizenship Program Assistant will also support the distribution of citizenship preparation materials to New Americans Corners across the Queens Library system.

  • Under the direction of the New Americans Program (NAP) Assistant Director of Programming and Operations, provides assistance to the day-to-day operations of NAP's citizenship and immigration services and program sites, and communicates any problems or issues to the NAP Assistant Director of Programming and Operations.
  • Assists with facilitation of citizenship prep/immigration services information sessions and workshops.
  • Schedules customer appointments and makes reminder phone calls.
  • Works with NAP, other Adult Learning staff and the Marketing Department to create marketing tools and promote the Library's citizenship and immigration assistance services.
  • Conducts internal and external outreach to connect immigrant customers and new users with library services and promotes the Library's immigration and naturalization legal services.
  • Provides concrete referrals to internal and external services and resources.
  • Provides guidance, information and assistance to Library staff.
  • Collects program statistics and provides reports as needed, including providing initial intake questions for one-on-one legal service appointments on citizenship application, information workshops and financial counseling sessions and etc.
  • Processes all documents and other required paperwork in a timely manner and helps track the use of program and office supplies.
  • Creates, distributes and replenishes citizenship prep/immigration services related program materials across the library system.
  • Participates in all relevant trainings and meetings.
  • Helps distribute and replenish USCIS materials to New Americans Corners within QL community libraries; provides assistance with auditing or reviewing display materials on New Americans Corners at the community libraries and the Adult Learning Centers.
  • Under the supervision of the NAP Assistant Director of Programming and Operations, will participate in special projects directly related to the Citizenship Programs/immigration services on a periodic basis.
  • Performs other duties as required.

** Requires travel to Queens Library Community Libraries & Adult Learning Centers. Varied schedule includes evenings and weekends. **


  • High School Diploma or Equivalency Diploma required. Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • A minimum of 1-2 years of administrative experience required.
  • Demonstrated successful public service experience, with the ability to work well with a diverse population required.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; Strong organization and planning skills required.
  • Proficiency with computer software applications (i.e. Office Suite software, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, social media, etc.) required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a team and independently required.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and reliability required.
  • Must be able to organize and maintain files.
  • Fluency in a second language spoken in Queens is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the U.S. naturalization process or knowledge of library immigrant services and multilingual programming preferred.
  • Must occasionally lift and /or move up to 25 pounds.
